I invited some participants to go the anthropological reconstructions in the Tropen museum (TM), and try to imagine how would it be to live in the original place that is being represented.
Although, I propose visitors to perform specially for the camera, is the museum itself by having this settings, that encourages the public to pretend that they are really in a different place (Mexico, Surinam, Mongolia, Arabia, just to mention a few). The TM wants to make their public experience how it feels to be in this far regions.
What do we do when we get into this places? We perform, we represent our idea of the other, we try to understand other people by imitating them. But, who are we representing when we imitate them? I think, this images reveal that the more we try to act like “others” the more we expose ourselves: our ideas and prejudices about the other. This images seems to reveal that represent the other, is not that much a way of getting to know them, as it is a way to getting to know ourselves.
